Introduction

I once heard someone say that every Christian wants to be thought of as a servant, but no one wants to be treated like one. In my experience, that has proved true time and time again.

At Vine and Branch, we talk a lot about how to read, understand, and practice Scripture. These are postures, attitudes, and skills we’ll never really master. There will always be something more to experience and learn. But man, we really like comfort, don’t we? We really like feeling in control as well. And, let’s face it, learning and changing are hard work. They require effort, resources, sacrifice, and humility.

Everyone likes to be thought of as a faithful reader of Scripture, but do we really want to do what’s required? This is especially true when it comes to specific parts of Scripture that have been “weaponized” or misused—passages like some of the ones we’re going to read this week in Colossians 3.

So for the next three weeks, we’re going to slow down a bit and add a few more practices to our study—practices that may help us grow in ways we haven’t grown before.

Ready?

Grace and peace, y’all,

John Ray and the Teaching Team

Text:

Colossians 3

Lord’s Prayer

Christ, who taught us to pray saying:

Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread and forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who’ve sinned against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory forever. Amen.
