Introduction

Funny how certain memories stick with us over the years. I remember this one time when I was in my late teens (maybe twenty years old at the most) and I was driving my grandfather’s car with my dad and grandparents all in it. I don’t know why I was chosen to drive but it felt like a big deal. We were driving on the highway and I casually dropped one hand off the wheel, steering with the other. I remember my dad saying “keep both hands on the wheel when we’re going this fast” . I felt a bit ashamed at being told how to drive in front of my grandparents, but also confused as my dad always drove with just one hand. In fact, he was notorious for driving, smoking a cigar, talking on his car phone (this was pre cell phones), in general not practicing safe driving habits. “Do as I say, not as I do” is an old adage supposed to keep people, usually children, from following down the wrong road. If only things worked that way. The reality is we almost always do exactly as we’re shown and rarely as we’re told. Actions always tell us more than words. In this week’s text Paul goes to great detail to remind the church at Corinth about this. But there’s much more here than just a reminder about being a good example, oh so much more. Let’s dig in and see what we can find.

Grace and peace, y’all,

Lord’s Prayer

Christ, who taught us to pray saying:

Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread and forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who’ve sinned against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory forever. Amen.
