Introduction
“How can this be?” Mary’s response to the announcement that she will bear the Messiah, even though a virgin, encapsulates the human condition. From almost the very start we begin asking: How will we make it? How will good come out of this? How can this be so difficult? How can this be possible? How can this be bearable? How can this be true? How can this be so painful? How can this be all there is? But also: How can this feel so good? How can this be so beautiful? How can this be so abundant? How can I be so happy?
All of it. How can it be? I think we know the answer if we will pause and listen and pay attention. Can we do that this Sunday, the final Sunday of Advent?
