Introduction
I ran into an old friend recently and while we only had a few brief moments to catch up, he said something that has stuck with me. When I asked him how things were going, he said, “I’m having to unlearn so much stuff and it’s really hard”. Ain’t that the truth. While much attention is rightfully given to learning new things, we can neglect how critical it is to also “unlearn” things, how to consistently and intentionally be aware of knowledge, habits, practices and ways of thinking that while they may have served us well in one season or situation are now proving untrue, obsolete or unhelpful.
Put another way, it’s really hard to get out of our own personal ruts.
This is the situation that Paul is facing with the Galatians. Even though they had received the faith by faith and had learned a new Gospel, the old ways of thinking about God and habits and practices of relating to God were deeply set. They needed to unlearn things so they could embrace the new thing.
Let’s dig in this week and see where maybe we also have some unlearning to do.
