(Our advent guide put together by Katie Rogers at Boston Mountain Youth Ranch can be found here.)
Introduction
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” These are probably some of the wisest words spoken in cinema. The concept can unlock a new way of seeing, feeling, appreciating, and prioritizing. They can pull us out of chaos, fear, rigidity, laziness, and conflict. The idea of life passing me by while I’m busy is something with which I’m painfully familiar. It’s probably a good idea for me to cross stitch the quote on a pillow or get it as a tattoo to keep the concept front of mind, but I’m not sure the words of Ferris Bueller needs to be forever written on my skin. Maybe there’s an even better concept (and tattoo) that could come about from thinking in these terms during Peace week of Advent.
Let’s explore together the ideas of wholeness, acceptance, and shalom, and maybe a few more references to “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”
